About apterous

User #0:
Charlie Reams

apterous was designed and developed by Charlie Reams, starting in June 2008 and continuing until, well, around about now. Charlie was an improverished student back then; he now lives and works in London, and tries to be kind to animals whenever possible.

Ideas man:
Jon O'Neill

Some initial funds were put up by Jon O'Neill, who was also responsible for many of the core graphics and website look-and-feel. A resident of sunny Rainham, Jono enjoys making the same cricket website over and over again. Various now-fundamental ideas in the design of apterous—"Attack" formats, conundrum buzzing, numbers methods—were his idea. It's fair to say that apterous would probably never have existed without his contribution.

Prettifier:
Matt Morrison

Much of the current design was undertaken by Matt Morrison. Matt is a nice man who lives with a woman off the Internet and their daughter, Indra, who is a full-time baby. He designs websites sometimes. Matt is also responsible for managing the player avatars so if you make it into the top 25 of Pro Ranks, expect him to start demanding that you get one.

Tunesmith:
Phil Reynolds

The official theme music heard in the game is an original composition by Phil Reynolds. Phil is an actor, performer, writer and other things like that probably. He also does an excellent line in audiobooks.

Test dummy:
Kirk Bevins

Voice of reason:
Ben Wilson

Many other people contributed to early testing and basic concepts, especially Kirk Bevins and Ben Wilson. And literally hundreds of people have filed tickets and contributed ideas and votes, all of which are gratefully received.

A lot of people helped with the English dictionary; Jim Bentley and Jon Corby made the original version, with lots of later edits by Mike Brown and Giles Hutchings. Many other people also helped with the longer words: Simon Myers, Jimmy Gough, Lesley Hines, Howard Somerset, Maxine Silkstone, Minny Reams, Jim Bentley, Ben Hunter, Michael Wallace, Ben Wilson, Ian Volante, Innis Carson, Damian Eadie, Paul Howe, Kai Laddiman and Kirk Bevins. And even more people suggested even more minor edits. And Hywel Morgan helped a lot with the Welsh dictionary. Thanks all of you!

To all of the above, and to all our players and subscribers over the years... thank you!
