Anthony Endsor

Anthony Endsor Good to see this tourney happening again.:) The only thing I would say though is, with the rule about games being played in a single sitting, as most of us will know, apterous often crashes mid-game, meaning the game would have to be restarted from where it was left off. How will it be decided whether it was just a case of apterous crashing, or the player decided themselves to leave the game?

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Good to have you taking part for a third year!
I find that mid-game crashes only seem to happen to me in human-v-human games or when apterous throws out everyone at once. Other than this occurrences of bot games crashing are extremely rare. Though I do appreciate that experiences may vary.

There are a few ways to help distinguish between apterous crashes and players leaving, but I won't go into them here.

Hopefully now I've mentioned it, it's not something I'll need to implement anyway. But it's an option I want to have in case.

Chris Butler Hmm, almost tempted to renew my subscription for this!

Spike Nard

Spike Nard Do it Chris!

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Chance to regain your title, Chris :)

Chris Butler

Chris Butler I know, but there's a big chance I'd fail my masters in the process!

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Now there's a dilemma

Gevin Chapwell

Gevin Chapwell What difference does it make if someone has a break halfway through a game? And you'll be checking in the chat logs when they started each game?

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier In theory, no difference. However it could also be used to hide more underhand practices. And would you expect Anne to hang around waiting for answers if you nipped off for lunch mid-recording?

Chris Butler

Chris Butler Couldn't resist

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Excellent

John Gillies

John Gillies Thanks for mailing me, Matthew. I might as well have a go as I don't play very much these days. Cheers.

Tourney round: Weakest Link Numbers Tournament 2018: Sign-up page

Round 1 - Junior >>

Notes from the organizer: In March after 3 months of competition Thomas Carey was declared winner of the second annual Weakest Link numbers tournament. https://www.apterous.org/to_meta.php?meta=5149
As much fun was had, I'm pleased to confirm that January will see the start of the 2018 tournament.

Starting with the easier variants this tournament will be a journey through apterous numbers formats with the lowest scorer(s) being eliminated each round.
One bot will be randomly chosen for each round and all players will play a numbers attack in that round's variant against that bot.
The lowest scoring player (or players if we need to eliminate more than 1) is knocked out each round. If there is a tie then the tiebreaks will be:
1) performance against opponent (i.e. margin of victory/loss over 20 rounds).
2) Total player score over all tournament rounds so far.

Starting from Jan 8th there will be a new round every Monday and Friday. Rounds will be overlapping with a two week time limit giving some flexibility in case of holidays etc. If you are going to be away from apterous for more than a week then aptomail me and you will be able to play round(s) early if necessary.
Hopefully there will again be enough participants to allow us to go through the full list of 23 recognised numbers attacks.

NOTE : Games should be played in a single sitting (barring unforeseen problems), after all there's no passing and coming back later in The Weakest Link. Anyone repeatedly failing to do this may have 10 points deducted from their score each time they re-commence.

Whether you have designs on winning the tournament, or you're just challenging yourself to get through the first few rounds, please don't hesitate to throw your hat into the ring.
Sign-ups will remain open until the end of the first week of the first round.
Good luck!

Ran from: 16 December 2017 – 14 January 2018. Format: Numbers Attack. Matches: One-off. Approved.
