Notes from the organizer: As is customary, I’ll be running a tournament based on major international football tournaments.
We’ve been here before for the Men’s World Cup in Qatar 2022 and the AUS / NZ Women’s 2023 World Cup won by Ronan (Croatia) and Matthew B (Germany) respectively.
The Women’s World Cup also saw the shameful doping scandal where the entire squad of hosts New Zealand (Harry L) tested positive for ana-gram-abolic steroids and were disqualified from their own tournament, which we hope isn’t repeated this year, nor any tournament in the future.
So far, we’ve had eight unique semi finalists (both player and nations), which shows the strength in depth of the competition.
In the summer of 2024, we are looking at two major men’s events - the European Championships in Germany and the COPA America in USA - and these will be combined into one Apterous version of the tournaments.
40 teams will compete (Euros - 24, Copa America - 16) so we’re limited to 40 entrants maximum (sign-up now to secure your place as they’ll be no qualifying).
Using ratings on the day we get our final sign-up, players will be placed into 4 pots of 10 teams to decide which country you’ll represent. I’ll then do a draw and you will randomly be allocated a nation to represent from your pot. This will decide whether you’re competing in the Euros or the COPA, you won’t compete in both.
We’ll then follow the real tournament schedule with games played in Champions League format and goals scored when you win a round with a max (mirroring past tournaments and also George’s Premier League / Championship and Andy’s recent Champions League tournament scoring for anyone familiar with those).
In the knockout rounds, extra time is effectively whoever wins the game as Apterous deems it (i.e. if someone has won more rounds but not with max words / numbers solves). If we’re all square after that, then the tie-break conundrum will act as the penalty shoot-out.
Once we have our Euros and COPA champions, the two will face-off against each other in the one-off Finalissima to decide the our tri-continental champion!

We’ll kick off on June 1st - two weeks before the start of the real tournament - to give us a chance to get it all played and I’ll set up knockout round fixtures as they are decided to try and keep things moving.
