Elizabeth Beer Doesn’t looking at the points in terms of percentage make it perhaps advantageous to pick fewer formats? Isn’t the fact that a player accrued less total points really their fault for not listing more formats?
Matthew Tassier Possibly, although on the other hand if some of the less hardcore numbers players are more likely to choose less formats then if you do the same you may miss out on playing them so it could possibly actually be disadvantageous.
| |
Tal Lessner So basically, what's stopping me from choosing only my very favourite format, and get the highest percentage possible?
Matthew Tassier Nothing, play the tournament however you fancy :)
| |
Tal Lessner Well, you know that there are a few players who will, if sticking to one format, get close to 3.0 average pts, even if they only play other top players. you and I are between these few probably.
| |
Matthew Tassier I suspect we'll find that most, if not all, of the stronger numberists will be keen for a range of games in different formats. I've certainly gone with a full list to get a game against everyone in the tournament. But let's see how it plays out.
Tal Lessner Fair enough, on second thought it's unlikely players will try to abuse this, and will perhaps invite more players to join a good fun number tourney.
Adam Latchford i've gone for all 25 tal be brave and go for even more than that somehow
Tal Lessner Of course, had Bullet Duck and Hyper Instant as my 1&2 picks
Tal Lessner Bullet Duck is really awesome by the way. Too bad only Rex & I enjoy it.
Dan Spinks very little idea what I was doing with my picks, I may have no tactics
Fiona T Where's the list of formats please?

Elizabeth Beer The available formats are:
| |
Jon Stitcher I'll play them all, numbers are way more fun than letters anyway.
Fiona T oh ok - so you sign up then get the formats! Thanks Elizabeth
Matthew Tassier 33 players have entered and selected formats, and with most peopler being quite flexible with their selections, everyone has a game against everyone else. Each players ranked choices are now available on the "Choices" sheet of the tournament spreadsheet, and some interesting irrelevant tables are available on the "Formats" sheet. Feel free to request others. There are 4 weeks or so to play games.
Matthew Tassier Final day today to play games and try to move up a place or two in the tournament table! |
Notes from the organizer: LET'S PLAY SOME NUMBERS!
With words currently in CRISIS over the approaching loss of a third of the dictionary (fortunately the nonsense third), it's a great opportunity to embrace the timeless sanctuary of numbers.
In this edition of Your Favourite Numbers Tourney each player will nominate as many or as few variants as they wish and then play a numbers game against all other players who nominated at least one of their chosen formats. Therefore anyone who only wants to play games in one format (Normal, perhaps?, Sudden Death? Junior? Aegilops? Nice?) can do that while players who want more of a variety can get that too.
Each player will submit an ordered list of the numbers formats that they would like to play games in to me by aptomail. Then each pair of players whose lists include at least one mutually accepted format will be assigned the format that is their combined favourite, that is that which has the lowest combined rank. If this is tied then the format which they gave the most similar ranking will take precedence, if there is still a tie then I shall favour the first of the two players to send me their list.
You will have roughly six weeks to play all your games and the scoring system will be 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss, 0 for an unplayed game. These points will then be turned into a percentage of total available points to allow for the fact that not all players will play the same number of games. A tie will be split by average points difference per game played.
At the end of the round-robin the top 4 players will proceed to a seeded 4 player knock-out where they will play a best of 5 with one game in each of their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th favourite combined formats. Should they not have that many overlapping formats then their favoutie format may make a comeback, and they may play a best of 3 or best of 1, possibly in Normal format if nothing else fits the bill.
The tournament organiser will be entering, anyone who wishes to see my pre-chosen ranked format list may request it once they have submitted their own list.
Sign-up will be open until the end of July with games becoming available as soon as approved formats have been chosen.
