Eoin Jackson

Eoin Jackson I don't get how the matches are generated.

How come I have 4 of these, even though I put it 2nd and not first (I have only one match in the variant I put first). And how come I have zero match ups in some variants (e.g. Aegilops / Speed) even though I picked all 25?

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall It's a mix of your priority order + your oppenents.

Eoin Jackson

Eoin Jackson I know, but how is it some of my lower down preferences generated no games at all?

Elizabeth Beer

Elizabeth Beer You are likely to have a few games in variants you put towards the top of the list, and more than might be expected from your own list in very popular variants. If someone lists an extremely unpopular (!) variant at or near the top of their list, it will not guarantee lots of match ups (as others may have put that variant at or near the bottom of their list…). To work it out you could assign numbers to the ordered lists, and then add up each variant’s score between each pair of players. For example, if you have OR as 2 but someone else has it 20th, that is a combined total of 22, but you might have Normal as 3 and the other person has it as 5th, that combined total is 8. Do that for all variants and the one with the lowest combined score “wins” (although with the two lists side by side it will not be necessary to calculate all of those totals)

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Because both you and your opponent must have another format higher up on both of your lists. Basically, if a format appears on both lists, then it's the format that has the lowest combined ranking number that you'll play. Matthew will explain better, but the sign-up page explains it quite well.

Eoin Jackson

Eoin Jackson I read the sign-up page several times before making this comment.

Tell me this, will some players who listed all 25 variants have more games generated than another player who signed up for all 25, because they picked a more sensible / popular order?

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier No, if you've listed all 25 formats then you will have one game against every other player in the tournament.

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier You will probably not play games in the variants towards the bottom of your list, unless your preferences are very much opposite to someone else's, or they are very picky.

Eoin Jackson

Eoin Jackson Ah, I get it now.
So my putting Octorock 2nd means I must suffer 4 Octorock games... and putting Spoilage first, means I get you, and am lucky not to have another 3 or 4 of them!

Note to self:- pick sensible choices next time.
