Fiona T Will dead ends count?

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Yes.

Mainly because I'm not going to check what's a dead end and what isn't, because that sounds like work.

Trevor Potts

Trevor Potts This has tested (and in doing so, enhanced!) my spreadsheeting abilities but I think I'm nearly there

Some questions so I can get it right:

- I'm a little bit unclear on the exact meaning of "incorrect solutions" - does this mean non-exact solves? So to take the example you have, in the second round Wilberforce may have cannily noticed that he had already used 12 in round 1, so opted to declare 11 instead. Would that be allowed or does he get nothing that round for missing the target?

- For the second tiebreak, does this mean that 1 has to eb the startpoint of the consecutive number sequence? So say Janet uses 1 through 7 but does not use 8. Wilberforce only uses 1 through 5, but uses 31 through 43. Does Janet win with a sequence of 7 (1-7) or does Wilberforce win with a sequence of 13 (31-43)?

Chris Hare

Chris Hare - By "incorrect solutions", I mean "when you declare something but don't get your arithmetic correct, so you score no points and are sad". I felt it was worth mentioning explicitly that intermediate numbers made on the way to something that turns out to be wrong won't be recorded by Apterous and thus won't count.

- Yes, 1 has to be the starting number. Janet prevails.

It's probably worth me clarifying (or re-iterating, depending on how people are interpreting the rules) that making a number twice (at any stage) doesn't stop it being "unique"; in hindsight, I should probably have said "distinct" instead.

Trevor MacEoin

Trevor MacEoin I'm great at complicating numbers rounds for myself so should do well on this :)

Tourney round: The Twelve Games of Chris-mas: Vol. III: So, Hare it is, Merry Chris-mas: Game Two

<< Game One | Game Three >>

Notes from the organizer: Game Two! Go on, have another mince pie.

For your second game, you'll face a nice, civilised Junior Numbers Attack against Apterous Prune, who'll do a fine job of sitting there quietly whilst you do all the work. Your score for the game will be the most unique (to you) numbers created by your calculations. I'm aware that that's a rather opaque description, so here's an illustration:

The first round selection is [1,2,3,4,5] and the target is 21.

*Janet does 4*5+1 = 21, which Apterous records as 4*5=20, 20+1=21. Janet has made two unique numbers (20 and 21), so scores 2 for the round.
*Wilberforce does (3*4)+(5*2)-1=21, which Apterous records as 3*4=12, 5*2=10, 12+10=22, 22-1=21. Wilberforce has made four unique numbers (10, 12, 21 and 22), so scores 4 for the round.

The second round selection is [5,6,7,8,9] and the target is 12

*Janet does 5+7=12, helpfully recorded by Apterous as 5+7=12. Janet has added another unique number (12), so scores 1 for the round, taking her cumulative score to 3.
*Wilberforce does ((9-8)*5)+7)=12, recorded by Apterous as 9-8=1, 1*5=5, 5+7=12. This makes three numbers (1, 5 and 12), but only two of those are new to Wilberforce, because he made 12 in the first round. That means his score for the second round is 2, and his cumulative score is 6.

The person who uses the most unique (to them) numbers in their game will win. The first tie-break criterion is overall game score, the second is most consecutive unique numbers ascending from 1, the third is highest unique number. Any further ties will be broken at my sole discretion. Please note that I'll be using the solutions as reported by Apterous to determine the numbers that you've made, so (a) incorrect solutions and declarations outside scoring range won't get you any points at all, and (b) if you're typing your solution in the Notes box, be sure to bracket it correctly so that Apterous parses it in the way you intend.

The BONUS TOURNAMENT POINT will be awarded to any player who makes a number over 100.

If you have any questions about the rules, scoring, or anything else pertaining to this tourney, please feel free to ask.
