apterous generally uses raw scores instead of the actual game score for computing high scores and personal bests. Raw scores differ from the actual score in that the game is scored as if the other player were not there; so, for example, if you declared a 6 and your opponent a 7 in a letters round, you would score no game points but 6 raw points.
Using raw scores is intended to level the playing field so that high scores can't be lost just by playing a good opponent. Of course, there's no way to make up for being beaten on the conundrum, but it's the best we can do.
