Matthew Brockwell

Matthew Brockwell It should be me v Colin in the GER v MOR match!

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Cheers Matthew - fixed.

Stu Harkness

Stu Harkness Group C comrades! I'm in Vegas until the 28th, definitely want to get my games played but timings might be really awkward...

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group D is our first completed (before the real tournament has even kicked off, well done!) England (Dan) top the group with China (Mike) joining them - both unbeaten after a hard-fought draw against one-another. Fiona and Ian are sadly heading back home to Denmark and Haiti respectively.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group H finished almost as close as is possible. Germany, Columbia and South Korea all finished with two wins apiece. Germany (Matthew) top the group with the superior goal-difference. However, Columbia (Adam) and South Korea (Thomas) finished with an identical goal-difference and goals-scored record. Sadly for Thomas, the next tie-break criteria is points gained in games between the tied teams. Adam won that game 2-1 and so he progresses. Huge commiserations to Maus, who heads back to Korea. Colin is also sadly on the flight home to Morocco.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group B is the next group to be completed with Australia (George) topping the group with a 100% record. In a crucial decider, Canada (Johnny) beat Ireland (Darren) 2-0 to secure 2nd spot with Nigeria (Piaras) sadly joining Darren on the early flight home.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group E sees a minor surprise with USA (Adam) being forced into runners-up spot by the Netherlands (Dave), who ended the group stage unbeaten. Vietnam (John) and Portugal (Dan) missed out and will make the journey home. It was a tight group though and one more goal for Vietnam in their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands would have seen them through at the expense of the ‘Oranje leeuwinnen’

Dave Kempshall Group F was won by the emphatic French (Hazel) who recorded three wins from three with scorelines of 5-0, 5-1 and 4-1. Joining them in the knockout stage are Brazil (Tass) having picked up two wins. Panama (Andy) won the consolation game again Jamaica (Anthony) 2-0 to finish third, but both unfortunately exit the tournament in the group stage.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group G saw hotly tipped Sweden (Tom) top the standing with a 100% record and big wins throughout (6-0, 4-0 and 4-1). In a hard-fought deciding game Argentina (Dave) pipped Italy (Andres) to the runners-up spot and a place in the knockouts. South Africa (Wesley) sadly join Italy on their way home. A slight upset in Group E sees Sweden (Tom) up against USA (Adam) in the last 16, which promises fireworks earlier than expected.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group A - rumours were already circling as to the lack of games played by New Zealand (Harry), but then the tournament was stunned as the host nation pulled out of the competition entirely. FIFA’s Gianni Infantino addressed fans’ concerns simply by saying “Today, I feel like we have a fair playing-field”. All of this means that Group A was effectively played out in a reduced three-team format with Norway (Steven) claiming top spot ahead of Switzerland (Joe) who eliminated the Philippines (Mark) on goal difference.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Group C - with their preparation disrupted amid scandalous news of all-night parties in Las Vegas, Japan (Stu) managed to regroup and qualify for the knockout stage. Spain (Florence) pipped them to top spot by securing the draw they needed against Japan to finish ahead on goal difference. Costa Rica (Matty) and Zambia (Alex) finished 3rd and 4th respectively and exit the tournament in the group stage.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall And that concludes the Group Stage - cheers everyone for getting those games played promptly. The Second Round will be set up shortly and here's the line-up:

NOR (Steven G) v JAP (Stu)
NED (Dave R) v ARG (Dave K)
ESP (Florence) v SWI (Joe)
SWE (Tom) v USA (Adam)
AUS (George) v CHN (Mike)
FRA (Hazel) v COL (Adam)
GER (Matthew) v BRA (Matthew)
ENG (Dan) v CAN (Johnny)

Some big nation clashes in there, plus both a Dave and Matthew derby.

Tourney round: 2023 Women's World Cup: Group Stage

<< Sign-ups | Knockout Stage >>

Notes from the organizer: So, here we go. The Group Stages.

No Ronan, nor Croatia, so we will have a new player / nation winning the trophy for the women’s version of the World Cup.

Group Stages are simple - 8 groups, 4 teams per group, everyone plays each other once and the top two teams in each group at the end advance to the knockout rounds. Games can end in draws during the group stage.

Throughout the tournament the scoring is as follows: you score a goal if you win a round by declaring a max (numbers rounds will be deemed max if you score the maximum points available, so if the target is 559 and the closest possible solve is 558 - you will score a goal if you win the round with a solve within 5 either side).

It’d be great if you could get your games played at the earliest chance so we stay on schedule. I’ll adjudicate at my discretion if there are any unplayed games, so do Cc me in to any mails trying to arrange a fixture.

Good luck everyone. Any questions, just ask them in the comments.

Dave
