Dave Kempshall I'm now removing anyone that misses two rounds from the tournament, so we are down to 41 competitors. 5 days to play this round. R5 will also go live shortly with a similar deadline.
Anthony Endsor Successfully not following instructions since November 2024 :)))))))))))))))))))
Tom Cappleman Is the palindrome bonus a one off or each time you do it?
Dave Kempshall Just the once Tom. 5 points max.
Trevor Potts Here you are Martin :)
| |
Dave Kempshall Trevor - I think a few people dislike the sharing of research / word lists during tourneys, so might be better to keep any research / lists private.
Trevor Potts Thanks Dave, will do! Apologies if I trod on any toes.
Dave Kempshall No need to apologise, you weren't to know.
Mike Lee Dave (and with apologies to Trevor for pointing this out) you’ve given Trevor the value of his invalid word in your spreadsheet (as things stand). The score should be 134 not 142
Fiona T 109 I think - isohels fails the rule!
Trevor Potts oh yeah I made the plural mistake earlier than I realised! I am an even sillier boy
Elwin Carlos Normally only have half a tin of soup for lunch. Don't know what possessed me to pluralise it. 🤷🏾♂️
Dave Kempshall Cheers for pointing out mistake guys, fixed now (114 including palindrome bonus).
Trevor Potts Dave if it helps I've stuck another sheet on that spreadsheet linked above where you should be able to just paste the url of a game in cell A1 and it'll calculate the score for you and check bonuses, validity, etc.
| |
Dave Kempshall Cheers Trevor, extremely handy. I don't possess the spreadsheeting skills you do :)
Trevor Potts No problem! I've been trying to develop my computery skills recently and nothing presents a fun sandbox like a Countdowny thing with quirky rules so thanks for providing practise material for me! :)
| |
David Holmes No YOU got confused between touchdown and goatdown... 🤦
Dan Southwell FFS Gutted! Played 3 practice games, made sure I was ready, nice and steady away then misclicked as the time was running out, selected a word I knew wouldnt count - as i was trying to remove it from my list the time ran out and i accidentally submitted instead!!!! ARGH!!!!!

Dave Kempshall UL Dan | |
Ian Wray So, Prune picked the atrocious OIHBKYTDS - 1 x valid 5 and 3 x valid 4s apparently… neither of which are words I’m familiar with!!!!!!
Ian Wray To be fair I had an invalid plural some rounds before that……
R Choudhary Out of curiousity, was it possible to find a word, of at least 4 letters, in the VCV or CVC pattern, with these letters -
| |
Roger Peak PINA shows up as a valid word in Lexplorer . . .
Show all comments | |
R Choudhary Thanks, Roger.
Fi Thorne Well Apterous has clearly never had a mani pedi! ;-)
Fiona T Have you seen its nails?!?
Chris Hare LUPIN for 5. | |
Tom B oops, played "niner" but that's not a word |
Notes from the organizer: We have four leaders all over the 400 point mark after three rounds - Florence (449) narrowly takes over from Matthew (337) as our leader with T-Cap (433) and Roger (415) hot on their heals. All four have scored excellently across all rounds. Can they keep it up? There is hope for the chasing pack as there are plenty more ‘bomb out early’ opportunities on the horizon.

Round 4 is all about alternating vowels and consonants in your words and we move to a Goat Attack for this one.
Every word you declare should follow a sequence of VCVC… or CVCV… declaring a word that doesn’t follow this format, declaring an invalid word or a word of fewer than 4 letters long will also end your game scoring.
- A 5 point bonus is on offer for anyone successfully declaring exactly 10 valid and qualifying words beginning with a vowel, and 10 with a consonant.
- A second 5 point bonus is on offer for anyone declaring a palindrome of 5, 7 or 9 or letters.
Example game:
1. UNIT
2. EMIT
3. FAVELA
4. GAMETE
5. LOGO
6. TOTAL
7. RELATIVE
8. RADAR (5 point palindrome bonus)
9. BASIC
10. EVER
11. IRIS
12. ORAL
13. OVER
14. HOBO
15. DEFINED
16. COVER
17. OPEN
18. ORES
19. IVES
20. ANAL
Game score: 105 (95 + 5 point palindrome & 5 point 10 x starting with vowel / consonant bonus)
